Solo choreography us one of the main ways I got better at dancing, for two reasons.
1. For both leaders and followers, without true understanding of your own body, how it occupies space, how it moves, how to do specific isolations on time etc. You will never become the amazing dancer you want to be. Dancing solo without having to take into account person is a great way to achieve the above.
2. Specifically for followers, without our own styling, how our arms moves, how our hips move, our head, our torso, our expression, we are completely relient on the leader. And rather than enjoying each dance as a magical expression / as an amazing experience / as a connection between two people, we are looking around for where the good leaders are for the next dance. By learning how to take control of your own body, and then experimenting in partnerdance, you can learn how to enjoy each dance, and be expressive and creative, in a way which doesn’t affect the lead / leader. So you can actually dance most dances regardless of the ability of the leader.
So now you may be thinking, okay great, how do I achieve all that?
Here’s how:
1) Dance at home in front of the mirror, you can practice specific things or free flow/improvise.
2) Go to technique classes such as Bachata Bootcamps
3) Do a solo choreography class like next week’s Bacha-Chicas or Reggaeton (DM me for info)
4) Always practice everything you learn on your own, regularly by yourself.
