“Bachata is one of the most popular genres in Latin music. Bachata began in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. The first Bachata song was produced after the death of dictator Rafel Trujillo, who had been censoring the country for years.
The first two tracks, “Que sera de mi” and “Borracho de Amor”, were produced by Jose Manuel Calderon, who was influenced by Bolero music but slowed down the tempo. The new approach paved the way for developing a new style, which was adopted by a large number of other artists.
However, some Dominicans detested the style because the dance and the lyrics were too sensual and uncultivated. As a result, renowned music halls and radio stations avoided Bachata music.
While this condition hindered the spread of the music, it allowed it to evolve freely in clubs and working-class communities. Ultimately, the lyrics about passion, despair, and lust were about human nature and how the music reflected in people.
In the 1980s, the style began to evolve, and new instruments were introduced into Bachata. Instead of the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar became the lead instrument, and songs began to be composed around it.
In the 21st century, the genre began incorporating elements of current music such as hip-hop, R&B, and Reggaeton.”
